The Biggest Mistakes You Can Make In Web Design

02 February, 2021

So, we are all used to people wanting a rather nice looking website that serves all of their needs, but there is a problem. You see, there are designers and client out there that simply do not understand the true inner workings of a website and the end result can actually be quite catastrophic. Keeping this in mind, it makes sense for us to, therefore, look at some of the biggest mistakes that can be made in web design to perhaps help stop you from making them yourself.

bad web designThinking The Site Is For Yourself

This is the first mistake in that people will often make suggestions or want a website for their business that fits in with their own personal preferences. However, even though this can often lead to you feeling quite good about it yourself, this does not necessarily mean that people visiting your website will think along the same lines.

Instead, you have to get inside the mind of the people that are going to be checking out what you have to offer. Are you giving them enough information? Is it laid out in a way that others will understand? Are you the only person in the world that thinks that those color combinations are such a good idea? Thinking that the site is for yourself can often spell disaster.

Your Home Page Makes No Sense

Your home page is also your landing page, so it is absolutely essential that it tells the visitor everything about your business or service. Every single person that visits your website should know what it is that you can do for them within five seconds because after that there is a tendency for them to simply click off and go elsewhere.

People will often make the mistake of filling their home page with too much information thinking that it is best to get as much as possible on there. However, that is not the case because it just makes it more likely that people will instead become more confused and feel as if they have been swamped by information. Never do this because it just makes it impossible for them to actually know what it is that they should do next thanks to information overload.

Bad Links And Broken Pages

This mistake occurs simply because the designer has not taken the time to check all of their work before the website is launched. There is nothing more annoying than discovering that there are pages that are not linked up correctly and when you click on that tab it takes you absolutely nowhere.

This has, in the past, led to restaurants with no working link to their menu, sites that require registration having broken links to the page where they are supposed to register, contact emails not working, images not showing up, the list really is endless. All that this does is it means you come across as being rather unprofessional and do you really want that to happen?

Poor Navigation

You must remember that even though you know where everything is on your website, the people that are visiting you for the first time have absolutely no idea where anything is. The problem here is that people will often end up neglecting the navigational part of their website and the outcome is that they do not explain in clear enough terms where everything is.

It is essential that your website flows so that people know where they have to go next in order to get the information they require or do whatever it is that they have to do. Failure to provide a nice, simple way of doing this means you are causing major problems for yourself.

Your Website Is Boring

This has to be the cardinal sin, but if your website is boring, then what is the point in having it in the  first place? If your website is just lacking in character and gives the visitor nothing at all, then they will just click off and go somewhere else that does tend to grab their attention. Look at it this way, would you hang around a website with no substance to it? Of course not, so why would you allow your very own website to be like that?

What is clear here is that these mistakes are often through a lack of planning not only by the client, but also the designer. An attention to detail is extremely important when it comes to designing a website as is being willing to check every single aspect before it is launched.

Do not allow yourself to get carried away with your own ideas because even though they may seem great in your head, that is often not the case when it starts to emerge on the screen. Give both yourself and your designer more than enough time to complete the job because it is pretty obvious that if you rush something the chances of mistakes being made will only increase.

Of course, you can also make life a lot easier for yourself by hiring a web design company that has the experience and talent to take your site and produce something that will blow your mind. Give us a call today to see how we can take your ideas and turn them into a stunning reality.
